‘Garang’ coverage in S’pore

KUALA LUMPUR: The Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial has been widely reported in Singapore, especially by the island republic’s The New Paper.

The tabloid devoted five pages, including the front page, to the high-profile Malaysian court case when the trial started on June 18.

The daily not only reported what had happened in court but also every detail outside the courtroom.

The daily captured the chaotic scenes outside the courtroom as the suspects made their way past the crowd.

Hogging headlines: Details and pictures of the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial were splashed all over the island republic’s ‘The New Paper’ and made it to the front page on June 19 and 24.

Photos of Abdul Razak Baginda's family members wearing white T-shirts with the words “And proud of it!” on the back were also published in the daily.

Last Sunday, the newspaper splashed stories on the Mongolian beauty on the front page with photos of Altantuya, Abdul Razak and his wife, with the headline His Garang (which means “fierce” in Malay) Women.

In that edition, the daily used five pages, including the front page, for the case and the main story focused on the Mongolian woman and Abdul Razak's wife Mazlinda Makhzan.

The daily labelled Altantuya as Abdul Razak’s “Garang Lover” while Mazlina was portrayed as “His Garang Wife”.

Altantuya’s father Dr Shaariibuu Setev was interviewed by the daily on the life of his daughter as well as events on the day he received the shocking news of her death.

The daily also published three exclusive pictures of Altantuya’s last European vacation and details of her holiday which were gleaned from testimonies in the High Court last week.

What do you do when you're short of news? Always look to your bigger neighbours for juicy bits to fill the pages because truth is, nothing much ever happens here anyway.

Haha. This is one big laugh. Well I suppose it's good exposure to what could happen to you when you don't be good, blackmail people and end up dead. Actually, I don't understand how people always say that Malaysia is unsafe, when tourists in Italy get pickpocketed more. There are more serious murders in the US and UK but yet, it's always the parang that scares people. Of course, it's never safe anyway, even here in Singapore, but one thing I realize most is that Singapore makes people complacent about safety because this place is so safe that you can safely place your wallet on the table without worrying that someone will snatch it and run away (just might) but it's pretty rare. I hardly/never do that because I'm just pure paranoid.

Think about that. Of all the cases of pickpocketing that I've heard from my friends, majority of them are Singaporeans. Hmm ??? A little paranoia saves us a whole lot of trouble.
